Land of a Hundred Thousand Welcomes…

Much Department of Justice Equality and Law Reform policy influenced by the great Adolf.… as long as you’re not black, yellow, from Bradford or anything remotely non-white…

Nothing we didn’t already know about our racist immigration controls, but the word deserves to be spread:

TOURISM OFFICIALS expressed concern to the Department of Arts and Tourism earlier this year about the behaviour of immigration officers at ports of entry after an Indian man who won a trip to Ireland in a State-sponsored competition reported suffering harassment and racial discrimination at Dublin airport.

He won the trip at an event organised by Tourism Ireland in Mumbai to promote Ireland as an attractive holiday destination.

Newly released documents show the prizewinner wrote to Tourism Ireland on March 2nd to complain of his treatment at Dublin airport. He outlined how, despite his having the required tourist visa and carrying a letter from Tourism Ireland, immigration officers insisted they did not believe the letter was authentic.

“[An officer] then asked us who had booked our hotel. We told him it was done by Thomas Cook in Bombay. He said that can’t be possible as why would Ireland Tourism [sic] book through Thomas Cook as they were a British company. We didn’t know what to say.”

He alleged many other Indian passengers were treated unfairly. “It was only the Indians who were being photographed at the immigration counter. It was clear-cut racial discrimination. Whole thing was very embarrassing.”

According to correspondence released to The Irish Times under Freedom of Information rules, Tourism Ireland responded to convey its “deep regret” to the prizewinner over his experience. “We are all very upset and embarrassed about the incident and will be taking it up at the highest levels with the Government department concerned . . .” the agency said.

The following day, an official from Tourism Ireland sent an e-mail to a counterpart in the Department of Arts and Tourism. “Another shock story about immigration,” he wrote. “We really need to do something about it. The friendliest destination in the world???”

This was followed by a letter from Tourism Ireland chief executive Paul O’Toole to secretary general of the department Con Haugh. He pointed out that, in line with Government policy, the organisation was seeking to develop new markets in the Asia-Pacific region and warned of the need to be competitive.

“A number of our partners and contacts have reported unfortunate instances when they or their clients have sought entry to Ireland, notwithstanding their belief that they had secured the necessary documentation,” he wrote.

Tourism Ireland regards India as one of the most promising developing markets and opened an office in Mumbai three years ago.

Two months after the incident, in response to a parliamentary question by Fine Gael’s Olivia Mitchell, then newly appointed Minister for Arts and Tourism Martin Cullen said he was “not aware of immigration policy being a significant concern to the tourism industry”.

Immigrant groups and representatives of the English-language education sector have regularly complained of the harsh treatment experienced by lawful foreign visitors at ports of entry.

Earlier this month, a Nigerian Catholic priest who travelled to Ireland on a tourist visa was arrested at Dublin airport before being strip-searched and placed in a prison cell on suspicion of trying to enter the country illegally.

George W Bush Strikes Again…

From TIME magazine (September 8th, 2008 issue):

Washington Objecting To Abortion

The Bush Administration announced a new regulation that would allow doctors to deny medical services on the basis of their religious or moral beliefs, overriding current state laws that require health-care workers to aid patients or refer them elsewhere. Opponents say the rule, which applies to 584,000 hospitals and clinics, could block patient access to everything from birth control to abortions to end-of-life care. The rule could go into effect after a 30-day comment period.

It gets better though… the Washington Post adds:

The rule empowers federal health officials to pull funding from more than 584,000 hospitals, clinics, health plans, doctors’ offices and other entities if they do not accommodate employees who refuse to participate in care they find objectionable…

While I am somewhat disappointed at myself for marvelling at the sheer redneckedness of Gee Whiz Bush,  I can’t help wondering if this fucking loon has ever heard of the Hippocratic Oath? Pretty imaginative policy making though… next step Eugenics?

I hope Mary Harney gets to read this… might be just the ticket for Ireland’s cash strapped Health Department. Here’s a few practical steps that medical professionals could adopt under the guise of religious or moral beliefs:

  • Catholics refusing to treat protestants;
  • Blacks refusing to treat whites;
  • Straights refusing to treat queers;
  • Men refusing to treat women;

My thinking: If we have a health system that uniformly treats everyone like shite, then why not allow medical professionals to refuse to treat as they see fit? Of course to avoid any accusations of discrimination we would have to make sure that there are legitimate moral or religious reasons for doing so, but as experience in Ireland teaches us, we can just make that up as we go along.

At least then half of the population might get some decent treatment rather than the whole population getting half-treated.

Catching terrorists…

A sobering thought… today is 10 years since the Omagh bombing, a savage attack where 29 people were killed by terrorists. It also happens to be the month that the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) estimates that there are now 1,000,000 people on the TSA (Transportation Security Administration) watch list. What’s been learnt? Well in Ireland and the UK quite a lot – and to be fair the Brits are not total eedgits when it came to noting the bleedin’ obvious. I’ll not rehash the ongoing debate on good vs. stupid security – Bruce Schneier does a better job of this than I ever could – but here are two links that just look at some numbers:

The UK terrorism arrest statistics (excluding Northern Ireland) from 11 September 2001 – 31 March 2007 show 1228 arrests were made and 427 charged over the 5.5 year period. With a population 59 million in Great Britain, that gives us an arrest rate of about 1.3 people per million of population.

Now for a back-of-the-envelope calculation on the US numbers (population 299 million). Do check out Bob’s numbers – they are guestimates, but they tie up with the stats above. If we extrapolate (and I think that we are being generous to the US by allowing them the same success rates as the Brits), at 1.3 per million we could expect about 390 people to be arrested and charged with terrorism related offences.

So my thought, if the US are chasing 390 arrests per year (I wonder do we include people randomly picked up and dumped on rendition flights?) then why are there 1,000,000 names on TAS’s watch list? Just to drive the point home: 25 million Americans will travel in 2008, including duplicates there are perhaps 400,000 people on the TSA watch list. That’s 2.5% of all travellers or 625,000 people.

So, the mission, pick the 390 people you want to nab from 625,000 travellers flagged by the TSA list. I can’t help thinking that they would be better off sticking to Where’s Waldo.

Feeling safer?!

When IT Providers Attack

What happens when you don’t pay a bill? Well you wouldn’t be surprised if you were refused service, had someone walk out the door on you or had service discontinued would you?

Normally this is fine and dandy – you provide a service, don’t get paid, pull the plug and chalk it up a bad client. But when IT providers attack others can get caught in the crossfire.

I was looking for a telephone number the other day and did my usual Google for the company – in this case Marine and General Insurances Limited in Clondalkin – and got www.www.mginsure.ie. Snapshoot of www.mginsure.ie on 30/07/08So off we go (see snapshot)… very strange. Somebody’s web server is pretty badly misconfigured – index.html should be served to any visitor that arrives. Ah well – I want their phone number so off I go and open it up.

index.html (Click on the filename to view.)

Even stranger. Let’s have a look at www.4u.ie and see what’s up…

Snapshot of www.4u.ie on 30/07/08

Looks like a pretty generic web design company portal page. I click around and not much happens, so I dig some more. (Obviously it wasn’t the busiest day for me and at this stage my curiosity was well aroused.)

Clicking around the first few links doesn’t get you anywhere… until I find a link that produces a database error. After poking around the page it looks like it was put up there as a web site design proof – many of the links are not complete and are just there as placeholders.

Next step – whois 4u.ie?

Looks like Trevor is into all sorts of stuff (Rate My Mate?) – who’s is he anyway? A quick trawl through the links on www.4u.ie gets us some more information. There is a link to www.4u.ie/stats (we’ve a snapshot here 4 you) and to www.4u.ie/clients (another snapshot4u) which gives us a list of clients. (The poor people at Marine and General Insurances Limited don’t seem to be a client of 4u.ie).

The list is a pretty unremarkable one (apart from the inclusion of a few politicians, and a few high profile names):

There’s Trevor! And he’s no less than a Fianna Fáil Councillor, so off to Google with us and, bless him, he even has a Bebo page! Just as well because it seems that whoever took down Marine and General Insurances Limited’s web site brought down poor Trevor’s too (www.trevorgilligan.com and www.trevorgilligan.ie). Not to worry, as well as his Bebo page, Fianna Fáil also have a web page dedicated to their up and coming starlet.

So, what this Trevor all about? Here’s the GoAskMeBollix guide to Trevor Gilligan:

1. A cunning linguist (source: Bebo page). Must be spending too much time looking after his constituents to run his Bebo profile though a spellchecker):

My name is Trevor Gilligan, Im a councillor for Fianna Fail in Clondalkin, South Dublin County Council (since 2004), i work with 4U.IE which sells Websites, Domains (Cheapest in IRE!), Hosting, Keywords, Statistics, Shopping online, Forums, and much, much more!

1a. Even more cunning than I thought, he doesn’t even use a spellchecker on his applications to register a business name with the Companies Registration Office (from www.cro.ie):

INFINITE BANDWITH (sic)

2. Ahh, more evidence of him being a busy man (Fianna Fail profile):

“I feel with my experience and abilities I have learnt to find the quickest and most efficient ‘route to results’. With the Internet and its usage my work is a lot less time consuming – needless to say rather than sitting back I can help more constituents.”

3. Is himself an IT professional and owner of 4u.ie (Fianna Fail profile and his Linked-in page):

i work with 4U.IE

4. Isn’t afraid of selling himself (Bebo page). Perhaps you should get a reference from Marine and General Insurances Limited before contacting him though:

4U.IE also invests in ideas so if youve got one… drop me a message. 4U.IE offers the best price and service!

5. Is a web site designer (Fianna Fail page) but we’ll never know just how good it he is since most of his sites appear to be down (30/07/08):

A lot of my time is spent designing Websites and using programming languages.

6. Has an interest in at least one author of pornographic literature (Bebo page)

7. Is alleged to not pay his bills (www.mginsure.ie, www.deskellycarpets.com and others)

This site has been deleted because Mr. Trevor Gilligan (4u.ie) didn`t pay money to people who work for him !!!

So is there a moral?

  • pay your bills..?
  • don’t leave disgruntled employees with the password to your (and your clients) web site(s)..?
  • realise that being an elected official, allowing IT providers to go postal on you and posting shite on a Bebo page are perhaps giving the wrong message..?

Comments are welcome as always!

Welcome to the BBC (Burnt Burger Country)

luigi_malones_temple_bar_dublin.jpgYou can’t beat a good burger can you…?

Well, careful now, that burger could be worst for you than you think…

I had the pleasure (?) of having lunch with some colleagues in Luigi Malone’s in Temple Bar, Dublin recently and ordered a burger for lunch:

Can I have that medium, please?

Certainly Sir!

Now you can’t beat a properly done burger and, with a slight edge on me from a surfeit of Guinness the previous evening, I waited with gleeful anticipation for my cure.

Well Holy Mother of God when the item arrived the smile disappeared from my face pretty quickly. What had started out as a good looking burger was incinerated beyond belief and had only a fleeting relationship with ‘medium’ at some time in its distant past.

I spoke with a very polite manager who explained that it was the policy of Luigi Malone’s to server burgers well done. When I asked him why that was the response I got was:

It’s a health and safety matter. I’m sure you would appreciate that as a chef.

porterhouse_parliament_street_dublin.jpgThank God for that – saved by a quick thinking restaurateur. I didn’t get the exact health and safety reason for the policy (although I did press the manager) but I can’t help drawing the conclusion that either:

  • The meat is so shite that to serve it less that incinerated would poison people;
  • The chef can’t do anything other than well done (perhaps he’s an Irish BBQ expert);
  • The waiting staff, bless them, couldn’t handle the increased workload (3 burgers x 5 degrees of ‘doneness’ = 15 things to remember… Ahhhhhhhhh!)

Personally I thing that the burnt yoke that landed in front of me could have chipped my teeth. And, if a waiter dropped the order, could crack tiles or fracture bones should it land on an unsuspecting customer.

Not to be outdone, the Porterhouse pub in Temple Bar has joined the BBC club. At least they offer you a fine choice of beer to get pissed with, saving you the pain of trying to eat the damn thing.

18/02/2009:

A new contender: Fitzers of Temple Bar. (Today the Fitzers homepage shows “Account suspended”, so perhaps they need to revisit their shite burger pricing structure…). I feel that they need a special mention – at €15.95 (courtesy of menupages.ie) they are obviously going for the “more money than sense” market. Make your choice:

1 Fitzers Burger or 16 McDonals Euro saver burgers!
